Many cities are named after their founder. However, in 1794,
Dr. Joseph Spencer gave the city its name after Vienna,
New Jersey, where he had participated in a Revolutionary War battle. Vienna began as a 5,000 acre settlement - a grant to Dr. Spencer for his services during the great war.
Vienna, WV is a suburb of Parkersburg that covers an area of 9.7 km² and has a population of 10,613 (2007). In the 1940ies the population almost tripled, in the following decade it grew by another 50%, but since the 1970s it has been somewhat stagnant, around 11.000 inhabitants.
In 2007, the average resident of Vienna, WV was 42.7 years of age, white (less than 4% of Vienna's population consist of non-Whites) and more likely to be female (53.2% compared to 46.8% males). The person had a one-in-three chance of living in a single household and a 50% likelyhood of being part of a married couple living together.
The median per-household income was $39.220 in 2000. In 2007 it was estimated at $47.218 which is approximately 25% higher than the average in West Virginia and shows a rather significant growth.
Despite a per-capita income of $24,452, 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line (incl. 10.2% of those under the age of 18).
