General Information about Vienna, ON
Vienna, Ontario, is situated in the Otter Valley.
Statistics Canada reveals that it is the home of only 566
residents which makes it a tiny little village indeed.
Originally, this small plot of land was named Shrewsbury
but its inhabitants were not all that fond of this name and
asked Cpt. Samuel Edison Sr. for a better suggestion.
Referring to the rolling hills surrounding the village and the
Captain's Austrian ancestry, he came up with Vienna,
a name that was instantly met with approval.
Just over 150 years ago, the population of Vienna was
around 1200 - and may, at its peak, have been as high
as 2.500 - because of the at this time very successful
lumbering trade. In the mid-eighteen hundreds the
Otter Creek Watershed was one of the most thriving
areas for business in all of Western Canada.
Eventually, the proposal was being made of Vienna becoming the capital of Ontario. This idea never materialised, but in 1853 Vienna was incorporated as a municipal village.
However, the economical prosperity did not last. Due to the neglect of reforestation in combination with the rather unfortunate force of nature, the businesses declined in size and number. Fires and floods destroyed private residences and business buildings and in as little as two decades, Vienna had suffered blows so severe it would never be able to return to its former prosperity.
In the early days of the 20th century, natural gas was discovered in the area but the anticipated increase in business opportunities and industry was diminished when the gas was piped off.
In 1998, Bayham was re-aligned with Port Burwell and Vienna to form an expanded Township of Bayham.
Today, Vienna houses the only Edison museum in Canada, where a generous collection of the genius' family's artifacts and furniture are on display. Four of the inventor's siblings were born in Vienna but his family left before Thomas Alva Edison's birth.
Coincidentally, the Municipality of Bayham is now host of the Erie Shore Wind Farm, the largest wind power project in Southern Ontario. Due to the 80m high constructions' constant exposure to wind, it will produce enough 'clean' energy to supply the public.
Port Burwell Christmas Bird Count
For over a decade, Ron Allensen has conducted an annual Christmas Bird Count and Walk-about in Pt. Burwell. Since 2006 the data has been officially registered with Bird Studies Canada, a not-for-profit organisation that also sponsors the event.
On a Sunday in December, bird finders - experts as well as amateurs - embark on walks, hikes and drive within a 15km circle in search for common and less-common species, such as Mockingbirds, the Eastern Bluebird and Winter Robins.
Mr Allensen has turned his own property, Monarch Landing on the north shore of Lake Erie, into a butterfly and bird habitat which attracts a bright spectrum of species all year round.
